NMC trains girl students at self-defence workshop.
NAGPUR: A girl walks through an isolated road. Suddenly, a group of evil-looking men jump at her from behind. The girl jabs and kicks them one by one in a certain sensitive place. As they squirm, she speeds to safety.
A girl is returning home late night. As she fails to get any transportation she is looking to get a lift. Taking advantage of the situation, a group of men in a car try to kidnap her. She fights back and men back off.
Some miscreants try to snatch handbag from a woman. She shows courage and kicks them.
NAGPUR: These are not scenes from any movie. They are actions displayed by women recruits from Regional Police Training School (RPTS) in Nagpur during a self-defence workshop in Nagpur Municipal Corporation-run school in Gandhi Nagar.
Assistant education officer (NMC) Sushma Mankar said anger and outrage in the city against the Delhi gangrape has led NMC schools train their girl students in self-defence. Mankar said NMC, in association with National Civil Defence College and RPTS, will frequently organize such workshops at its schools. Under the programme, girl students will be trained to tackle real-life situations and protect themselves from anti-social elements through basic self-defence techniques.
Women should raise their voice against crime, Mankar said adding that the training programme would teach not only self-defence techniques but also aid in the development of confidence, positive attitude, greater fitness and discipline among girl students and women teachers.
"We got an opportunity to show that girls are no less than boys. We have good teachers who taught us to defend ourselves and even attack back," said budding cop Komal Akhade. She pointed out that self-defence was not just martial art. "It does not require years of practice to get right and might not look very elegant but can dramatically increase your chances of coming out safely from a sticky situation. Let us learn how to take care of ourselves, while the country gears up to take care of us," she added.
Poonam Jogdand, a student, seriously followed the workshop routine. "This is a very good step. The girls will feel safe and their confidence level will go up," said the standard VIII student.

Blast on railway track in Assam's Kokrajhar district, no injuries reported
KOKRAJHAR: Passengers of the Howrah-Guwahati down Garibrath Express had a providential escape on Sunday when a powerful bomb exploded on the railway tracks minutes after it passed Goabari in lower Assam's Kokrajhar district.
There was no casualty or injury. The bomb suspected to have been planted by the anti-talk faction of the National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) exploded at 1.10am two minutes after the train passed the area between Gossaigaon and Fakiragram, police said.
The blast blew away three feet of railway track and left a two feet deep crater at the spot, they said.
Initially, train services were affected for about five hours. But the line was repaired and train services restored in the morning.
As the railway line is a double track one, the trains scheduled to pass over the damaged track were diverted to the adjacent one, railway sources said.
Security forces have launched a search operation to nab the ultras.

Railway serving rat in food.
AHMEDABAD: A family from Valsad was served a revolting dish of 'rat biryani' from the pantry of the Sarvodaya Express while returning home from a pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu & Kashmir.
Teacher Nilesh Patel and his wife had ordered three vegetarian biryanis — one to be shared between their two sons. When their son Monik dug a spoon in the dish, something heavy obstructed him. When Patel tried to help him out, it was found that a rat had been cooked in the biryani.
Half of the about 300 pilgrims from Ahmedabad on the train had ordered the biryani dish. "The experience was horrifying," Patel said. "We have pledged never to have food from the railway pantry again."
Angry passengers later confronted the train staff. A waiter tried to throw out the remaining biryani at the New Delhi railway station, but some passengers recorded his actions using their mobiles. When the protests got angrier, the railway police intervened to contain the situation.
Patel was then able to make a formal compliant "The pantry manager gave us a written apology and agreed to take responsibility if any passenger suffers from food poisoning," he said.
